6 Day Tanzania Big Five Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania – Planet Lodge
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be welcomed by a representative from Hike Kilimanjaro Ltd and transferred to Planet Lodge or a similar accommodation in Arusha. (1-hour transfer to your lodge in Arusha), You will have a full briefing with your guide to ensure you’re fully prepared for the safari.
Note:
Your pre-safari briefing will be conducted at your hotel. If you arrive before 5:00 PM on the day prior to your safari, the briefing will take place that evening. If you arrive later, your guide will meet you for the briefing on the morning of your safari before departure. This ensures you’re fully prepared and have the opportunity to ask any last-minute questions
Please also note that hotel check-in is from midday (12:00 PM). If your flight arrives early in the morning, kindly let us know in advance. We can arrange a day-use room for you, or, if you prefer, we can organize some short activities to keep you engaged until your check-in time.
Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire National Park
Drive Time: Approx. 2 hours (120 km)
After breakfast at your hotel in Arusha, your Hike Kilimanjaro guide will meet you for a short pre-safari briefing before setting off on your wildlife adventure. The day begins with a scenic drive south to Tarangire National Park, one of Tanzania’s most underrated gems. Known for its ancient baobab trees, towering termite mounds, and massive elephant herds, Tarangire offers rich wildlife viewing, especially during the dry season.
Enjoy a full-day game drive with a picnic lunch served inside the park under a shaded acacia tree.
Later in the afternoon, drive to Karatu for check-in, dinner, and overnight.
Day 3: Karatu to Serengeti National Park (Central Serengeti)
Drive Time: Approx. 4–5 hours (215 km, via Ngorongoro Conservation Area)
After an early breakfast, journey through the lush highlands of Ngorongoro on your way to the world-famous Serengeti National Park. You’ll pass the Ngorongoro rim with a brief stop at the crater viewpoint for photos. Entering the Serengeti via Naabi Hill Gate, the landscape opens up into iconic savannah plains dotted with acacia trees and abundant wildlife.
Enjoy a game drive en route to your tented camp, with a picnic lunch in the park.
Arrive at Embalakai Authentic Camp in Central Serengeti in the late afternoon, settle in, and enjoy dinner under the starlit African sky.
Day 4: Full-Day Game Drive in Serengeti National Park
Spend the full day exploring the Central Serengeti, a region rich in predator activity and home to the Serengeti’s resident wildlife, including lions, leopards, elephants, and more. Depending on the season, you may also witness parts of the Great Migration with massive herds of wildebeest and zebra on the move.
A picnic lunch will be provided in the park to maximize game viewing time.
Return to camp in the evening for relaxation, a campfire, and dinner.
Day 5: Serengeti (Morning Game Drive) – Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Drive Time: Approx. 2.5–3 hours (150 km)
Enjoy an early morning game drive in the Serengeti, taking advantage of the cooler temperatures and increased animal activity. After a hearty breakfast back at camp (or packed depending on timing), you’ll begin the drive toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
Stop for a picnic lunch along the way as you transition from the open plains of the Serengeti to the forested slopes of the Ngorongoro Highlands.
Arrive at Embalakai Ngorongoro Camp in time to relax, enjoy dinner, and prepare for your crater adventure the next day.
Day 6: Ngorongoro Crater Tour – Drive to Arusha – Transfer to Airport
Drive Time: Approx. 4–5 hours (190 km)
After an early breakfast, descend 600 meters into the Ngorongoro Crater for game drive in this unique wildlife haven. The crater floor is home to the endangered black rhino, as well as lions, hyenas, elephants, hippos, and thousands of grazing herbivores.
Enjoy a picnic lunch near the Hippo Pool before ascending the crater wall. After your game drive, begin the drive back to Arusha. Depending on your flight schedule, you’ll be transferred directly to Kilimanjaro International Airport for evening departure or dropped off at your hotel (if pre-arranged).
Note: We recommend booking flights after 9:00 PM to allow for comfortable travel.

This marks the final day of your unforgettable Tanzania Big Five Safari – 6 days with Hike Kilimanjaro. After your game drive in Ngorongoro Crater, you will be transferred directly to Kilimanjaro International Airport. Due to the long driving distance, we highly recommend booking a night flight departing from 9:00 PM onward. Alternatively, you may choose to add an extra night in Arusha and depart the following day to allow for a more relaxed and comfortable end to your journey.
The best airport to fly into is Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), located about 45 km from Moshi and 50 km from Arusha, making it the most convenient airport for Kilimanjaro climbers.
Hike Kilimanjaro Ltd can arrange airport transfers between JRO and your hotel for an additional cost. Just send us your flight details in advance.
If you cannot find a direct flight to Kilimanjaro, you can also fly to Nairobi (NBO), Kenya or Dar es Salaam (DAR), Tanzania. From there, take a connecting flight to JRO or travel by shuttle bus or private transfer to Moshi or Arusha. Nairobi is closer and often has more international flight options.
Airlines flying to Kilimanjaro include KLM, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, Condor, Precision Air, and RwandAir. Domestic flights within Tanzania are available with Air Tanzania, Precision Air, Coastal Aviation, Regional Air, Fly540, ZanAir, and Air Excel.
