8 Day Serengeti Migration River Crossing Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Arusha
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be welcomed by a representative from Hike Kilimanjaro Ltd and transferred to Planet Lodge or to the similar accommodation in Arusha. (1-hour transfer to your lodge in Arusha), you will have a full briefing with your guide to ensure you’re fully prepared for the safari.
Note:
Your pre-safari briefing will be conducted at your hotel. If you arrive before 5:00 PM on the day prior to your safari, the briefing will take place that evening. If you arrive later, your guide will meet you for the briefing on the morning of your safari before departure. This ensures you’re fully prepared and have the opportunity to ask any last-minute questions
Please also note that hotel check-in is from midday (12:00 PM). If your flight arrives early in the morning, kindly let us know in advance. We can arrange a day-use room for you, or, if you prefer, we can organize some short activities to keep you engaged until your check-in time.
Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire National Park
Distance: Approx. 2 hours (120 km)
After breakfast, depart for Tarangire National Park, famous for its massive elephant herds and baobab-dotted landscapes. Enjoy a full-day game drive with a packed picnic lunch inside the park. In the late afternoon, drive to your lodge located near Karatu for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Karatu to Central Serengeti via Ngorongoro
Distance: Approx. 4–5 hours (225 km)
Leave early and drive through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, descending onto the endless plains of the Central Serengeti. Game drive en route with picnic lunch. Spot resident wildlife like lions, cheetahs, and elephants. In the evening, continue to your tented camp for check-in, relaxation, and dinner.
Day 4: Central Serengeti to Northern Serengeti (Mara River)
Distance: Approx. 3–4 hours (150 km, game drive route)
Enjoy a scenic game drive heading north toward the Mara River, crossing key migration corridors. Along the way, watch for predator action and massive herds. After your drive, arrive in the late afternoon at your safari camp near the Mara River for dinner and overnight.

Day 6: Return to Central Serengeti – Game Drive En Route
Distance: Approx. 3–4 hours (150 km)
Enjoy a game-viewing transfer as you journey back south to the Central Serengeti, exploring different ecological zones along the way. Arrive at your camp in the late afternoon, just in time for a hot shower and a cozy dinner.
Day 7: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Highlands
Drive time: Approximately 3.5 to 4 hours with game drive stops
After breakfast, enjoy a morning game drive in the Serengeti as you begin your journey toward the Ngorongoro Highlands. You’ll travel with packed lunch and bottled water, with a scenic picnic stop along the way.
On this day, you also have the option to visit Oldupai Gorge, one of the most important paleoanthropological sites in the world, for an additional $36 per person.
Afterward, continue your journey and check in at your camp near the crater rim.

Day 8: Ngorongoro Crater Tour - Transfer to Kilimanjaro Airport
Distance: Ngorongoro to Kilimanjaro Airport – Approx. 4.5 to 5.5 hours (200 km)
Descend early into the Ngorongoro Crater for game drive. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a chance to spot rhinos, lions, buffalo, elephants, and hippos in a unique enclosed ecosystem. After a picnic lunch by a hippo pool, begin the drive back to Arusha and onward to Kilimanjaro Airport for your evening flight.

After your game drive in Ngorongoro Crater, you will be transferred directly to Kilimanjaro International Airport. Due to the long driving distance, we highly recommend booking a night flight departing from 9:00 PM onward. Alternatively, you may choose to add an extra night in Arusha and depart the following day to allow for a more relaxed and comfortable end to your journey.
The best airport to fly into is Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), about 45 km from Moshi and 50 km from Arusha. It is the most convenient airport for Kilimanjaro climbers.
Hike Kilimanjaro Ltd can arrange airport transfers between JRO and your hotel for an additional cost. Simply send us your flight details in advance.
If you cannot find a direct flight to Kilimanjaro, you can also fly to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) or Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR). From there, take a connecting flight to JRO or travel by shuttle bus or private transfer to Moshi or Arusha. Nairobi is closer and often has more international flight options.
Airlines flying to Kilimanjaro include KLM, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, Condor, Precision Air, and RwandAir.
