How to Prevent Altitude Sickness During the Lemosho Route Trek?
Preventing altitude sickness on the Lemosho Route is all about smart pacing, hydration, and acclimatization. Here’s how you can minimize your risk:
Climb High, Sleep Low – The Lemosho Route is designed with gradual ascents and overnight camps at lower elevations, allowing your body to adjust naturally. Avoid rushing to higher camps.
Take It Slow – Hike at a steady, comfortable pace. “Pole pole” (Swahili for slowly) is the mantra on Kilimanjaro. Overexertion increases your risk of altitude sickness.
Stay Hydrated – Drink plenty of water throughout the day (3–4 liters recommended) to help your body cope with altitude. Avoid excessive alcohol or caffeine.
Eat Light and Nutritious – Carbohydrates are great for energy. Don’t skip meals, as your body needs fuel to acclimatize properly.
Listen to Your Body – Watch for symptoms like headaches, nausea, dizziness, or shortness of breath. If symptoms worsen, inform your guide immediately.
Medications (Optional) – Some climbers use acetazolamide (Diamox) to help acclimatize. Only take medication under medical guidance.
Rest and Sleep Well – Proper rest each night aids recovery and acclimatization.
By following these strategies and relying on the expertise of Hike Kilimanjaro’s certified guides, you can significantly reduce the risk of altitude sickness and enjoy a safe, successful trek.

What Is the Best Time to Climb Kilimanjaro via the Lemosho Route?
The best time to climb Kilimanjaro via the Lemosho Route is during the dry seasons when the weather is most stable and the trails are safer.
January to mid-March: Mild temperatures, fewer crowds, and clear views make this a quieter and enjoyable climbing window.
June to October: Peak season with dry, sunny weather, ideal for stunning views above the clouds and higher summit success rates.
It’s best to avoid the rainy periods of April–May and November, when trails can become muddy and visibility is limited. Hike Kilimanjaro offers year-round departures and can recommend the optimal time based on your preferences and schedule.
Tipping Tips for Your Kilimanjaro Trek via the Lemosho Route
Tipping is an important way to show appreciation to the hardworking Kilimanjaro crew, including guides, assistant guides, cooks, and porters.
A general guideline is around 10% of your total trip cost, usually pooled and shared among the staff:
Lead Guide: $20–$25 per day
Assistant Guide: $15–$20 per day
Cook: $15–$20 per day
Porters: $8–$10 per day each
Tips are typically given at a small ceremony at the end of the trek. While some hotels include a 10% service charge, tipping your mountain crew is separate and voluntary. The exact amount is up to you, based on your satisfaction with the service.
Phone and Gadgets Charging on the Lemosho Route
On the Lemosho Route, electricity is very limited once you’re on the mountain. Most camps don’t have charging facilities, and any power is mainly for staff or emergencies.
Tips for keeping devices charged:
Bring a high-capacity power bank (10,000 mAh or more) or a portable solar charger.
Charge all devices fully in Moshi or Arusha before starting the trek.
Bring a universal travel adapter (Tanzania uses Type D and Type G plugs).
Save battery by turning devices to airplane mode, lowering screen brightness, and switching off GPS/Bluetooth when not in use.
Keep devices warm at night by storing them in your sleeping bag to preserve battery life.
