Kilimanjaro Marangu Route Trek Overview
The Marangu Route is the most historic and established trail to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, often referred to as the “Coca-Cola Route” due to its popularity and the availability of soft drinks at some mountain huts. This route is unique among all Kilimanjaro trekking routes for its hut-based accommodation, offering a level of comfort not found on camping routes, ideal for those seeking a more sheltered and straightforward trekking experience.
Starting from the southeast side of the mountain, the Marangu Route winds through lush rainforest zones, transitions into misty heath and moorland, and ascends to the barren, otherworldly alpine desert before reaching the dramatic summit of Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa.
While it is considered one of the easier paths in terms of terrain, the Marangu Route has fewer days for acclimatization than other routes, making it a moderate to challenging Kilimanjaro climb depending on your physical condition and altitude adaptation. The 6-day Marangu Route itinerary, offered by Hike Kilimanjaro, is designed to improve your summit success while maintaining comfort and safety at every stage.
This route is perfect for first-time Kilimanjaro climbers, solo travellers, and families who value comfort and tradition. Along the way, you’ll encounter stunning views from Maundi Crater, walk beneath ancient forest canopies, and witness sunrise from Gillman’s Point before completing your journey at the Roof of Africa.
Whether you’re taking on a personal challenge or seeking a guided Kilimanjaro trek, the Marangu Route with Hike Kilimanjaro offers a memorable, professionally-supported experience on a trail steeped in history and natural wonder.
Kilimanjaro Marangu Route Trek Itinerary
Day 01: Arrival in Tanzania
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be welcomed by a representative from Hike Kilimanjaro Ltd and transferred to Planet Lodge in Arusha or to a similar Lodge. After check-in, you will have a full briefing with your guide, including a gear check to ensure you’re fully prepared for the trek.
- Overnight at Planet Lodge
- Breakfast included
Note: Your pre-trip briefing will be held at our office if you arrive before 4:00 PM, or at your hotel if you arrive later. Please bring copies of your passport and travel insurance for permit processing.
Hotel check-in starts at 12:00 PM. If you arrive early, let us know we can arrange a day-use room or short activities until check-in.
Day 2: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
After breakfast, we drive to Marangu Gate, located on the southeastern side of Kilimanjaro. Once registration formalities are complete, we begin our trek along a well-maintained forest trail. This section is rich in flora and fauna, with sightings of blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and a variety of birds. The path gradually ascends through dense vegetation before opening up to reach Mandara Hut, where you’ll spend your first night on the mountain.
- Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
- Distance: 8 km (5 miles)
- Elevation: 2,700 m (8,858 ft)
- Overnight at Mandara Hut
- Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included
Day 3: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Today’s trek begins with a short climb through the last stretch of forest before transitioning into open moorland. The trail is dotted with large lobelias and giant groundsel, iconic high-altitude plants native to Kilimanjaro. As you ascend, views of Mawenzi Peak, Kilimanjaro’s second highest summit, begin to appear in the distance. You’ll reach Horombo Hut, where you’ll relax, hydrate, and enjoy the panoramic vistas
- Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
- Distance: 12 km (7.5 miles
- Ending Elevation: 3,720 m (12,205 ft)
- Overnight at Horombo Hut
- Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included
Day 4: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut
Spend an extra day at Horombo for acclimatization, a key factor for summit success. Take a short acclimatization hike toward Mawenzi Ridge (optional), then return to Horombo for rest. This day improves your body’s adjustment to altitude and increases your chances of reaching the summit.
- Elevation: 3,720 m (12,205 ft)
- Overnight at Horombo Hut
- Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included
Day 5: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
The route today leads through a high-altitude desert landscape. You’ll pass the famous “Last Water Point” and traverse the saddle, a vast, open expanse between the Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The air is thinner here, and the trail feels more remote and rugged. Upon reaching Kibo Hut, you’ll have an early dinner and head to bed in preparation for the summit attempt later that night.
- Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
- Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles)
- Ending Elevation: 4,703 m (15,430 ft)
- Overnight at Kibo Hut
- Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included
Day 6: Summit Day – Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut
Your summit push begins just after midnight. The trail to Gillman’s Point (5,685 m) is steep and demanding, with switchbacks zigzagging up a rocky slope under starlit skies. From Gillman’s, it’s another 1–2 hours to the summit, Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Arriving at sunrise, you’ll stand on the Roof of Africa, surrounded by glaciers, volcanic craters, and endless sky.
After enjoying your achievement, descend carefully back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and meal before continuing further downhill to Horombo Hut, where you’ll spend the night.
- Hiking Time: 12–16 hours
- Total Distance: 21 km (13 miles)
- Ending Elevation: 3,720 m (12,205 ft)
- Uhuru Peak: 5,895 m (19,341 ft)
- Overnight at Horombo Hut
- Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included
Day 7: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate – Transfer to Arusha or Moshi
On your final day, you’ll descend through the lush montane rainforest, surrounded by the rich sights and sounds of Kilimanjaro’s vibrant lower slopes. The trail can be muddy and slippery, especially after rainfall, so we recommend using trekking poles and stepping with care.
Upon arrival at Marangu Gate, you’ll receive your official Kilimanjaro summit certificate from the national park authorities, a proud token of your achievement in reaching Uhuru Peak. A freshly prepared hot lunch will be served at the gate.
Your Hike Kilimanjaro driver will be ready to welcome you and transfer you back to Arusha or Moshi. It’s the perfect moment to relax, reflect on your unforgettable journey, and celebrate your successful summit of Africa’s highest mountain.
- Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
- Distance: 20 km (12.4 miles)
- Elevation: 1,870 m (6,135 ft)
- Overnight at Planet Lodge or similar
- Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included
Day 8: Departure Day
After breakfast, depending on your flight schedule, you will be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your departure.
- Breakfast included
Note:
Check-out time at the hotel is 10:00 AM. If your flight is scheduled for the evening or night, you may book a day-use room to rest and freshen up before your departure. Please inform us in advance if you would like us to reserve a room for you.
Note
The Marangu Route, often referred to as the "Coca-Cola Route," is the most established and comfortable path to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the only route that offers permanent hut accommodation, making it a popular choice for trekkers who prefer not to camp. These mountain huts provide simple yet practical shelter, complete with beds and solar lighting—offering a warm and dry refuge after each day of trekking.
Starting on the southeastern side of Kilimanjaro, the Marangu Route takes you through dense montane rainforest, rolling moorlands, and rocky alpine zones before reaching the icy summit at Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,341 ft). While it follows a direct ascent and descent along the same trail, the addition of a full acclimatization day at Horombo Hut significantly increases your chances of summit success.
This route is ideal for trekkers looking for a more straightforward, less physically demanding trail—without sacrificing the magic of Kilimanjaro’s breathtaking scenery. Along the way, you’ll enjoy spectacular views of Mawenzi Peak, pass through ancient volcanic landscapes, and gain insight into the mountain's ecological diversity.
With its historic reputation, comfortable sleeping arrangements, and consistent success rates, the Marangu Route is a great option for first-time climbers or those looking for a quieter, more traditional Kilimanjaro trekking experience.

Related Information
Embarking on the Marangu Route to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro offers a unique and memorable trekking experience. Known for its comfortable mountain hut accommodations and straightforward path, this route is ideal for those seeking a less rugged ascent. To help you make the most of your journey, it’s essential to be well-prepared and informed. In this section, we provide key details, expert advice, and practical tips to guide your planning, enhance your experience, and increase your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak successfully.
Why Choose the Marangu Route?
The Marangu Route on Kilimanjaro is the only route that offers hut accommodations, making it ideal for trekkers who prefer a roof over their heads instead of tents. Known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” it provides a more comfortable and less rugged experience. With a relatively gentle ascent profile and well-defined paths, it is often recommended for first-time Kilimanjaro climbers. If you’re looking for an affordable, efficient, and scenic route with the comfort of hut lodging, the Marangu Route is an excellent choice.
What Makes the Marangu Route Different?
Unlike all other Kilimanjaro routes, Marangu uses the same trail for both ascent and descent. This makes it unique but also means it tends to be more crowded, especially during high season. The biggest distinction, however, is the use of dormitory-style huts instead of tents. Trekkers stay in simple but functional Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo Huts, which provide bunk beds, mattresses, solar lighting, and shared toilets, a feature no other route offers.
How Difficult is the Marangu Route?
The Marangu Route is considered one of the easiest in terms of trail gradient and trekking comfort. However, its summit success rate is lower than other routes due to its rapid ascent profile. Hike Kilimanjaro addresses this by offering a 6-day Marangu itinerary that includes an acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, greatly improving success rates and reducing the risk of altitude sickness.
What is the Success Rate of the Marangu Route?
The Marangu Route has a success rate of about 50–60% on standard 5-day itineraries, but this improves significantly with a 6-day itinerary, reaching 70–85% for trekkers who add the extra acclimatization day. Hike Kilimanjaro always recommends the 6-day version to maximize your chance of reaching the summit safely.
What is Accommodation Like on the Marangu Route?
All accommodations on the Marangu Route are permanent mountain huts. Each hut provides:
- Bunk beds with mattresses (sleeping bags still required)
- Basic solar-powered lighting
- Shared toilets (flush at lower huts, long-drop at higher ones)
- Dining halls at each camp
While not luxurious, these huts offer a warm, dry, and comfortable alternative to camping, especially appealing during the rainy seasons. This makes Marangu the only non-camping route on Kilimanjaro
Is the Marangu Route Crowded?
Yes, the Marangu Route is one of the most popular Kilimanjaro routes due to its hut system and reputation as the easiest route. Because the ascent and descent are done on the same trail, the congestion is more noticeable than on one-way routes like Lemosho or Machame. However, the well-maintained trail and spacious huts mitigate the effects of crowding, especially when traveling outside peak season.
How Does Marangu Compare to Other Kilimanjaro Routes?
While the Machame and Lemosho routes are known for their stunning scenic diversity and excellent acclimatization profiles, Marangu stands out for its comfort and simplicity. It’s the only Kilimanjaro route that offers accommodation in permanent huts.
In comparison:
Machame Route is more challenging and scenic.
Lemosho Route offers the best acclimatization and landscape variety.
Rongai Route is the quietest, with a more gradual ascent.
Tipping on Marangu Route Trek
Tipping is customary and appreciated on all Kilimanjaro treks. For guidelines, read our blog on Tipping Etiquette for Kilimanjaro Climbs.
Phone and Gadgets Charging on the Marangu Route Trek
We recommend bringing power banks or solar chargers to keep your devices running, as there are no charging facilities on the trail. Prepare in Moshi or Arusha, and bring a universal travel adapter for plug types D and G.
What is the Best Time to Climb the Marangu Route Trek?
The best times to climb Kilimanjaro via the Marangu Route are during the dry seasons:
- January to early March (warmer, less crowded)
- Late June to October (cooler, peak season)
Climbs are possible year-round, but April–May and November are wetter and less ideal. Since Marangu uses huts, it’s one of the better choices during rainy months, offering shelter from the elements that tent routes cannot.
Food Options During the Marangu Route Trek
While trekking the Marangu Route, you’ll enjoy nutritious and freshly prepared meals designed to fuel your climb. Our mountain chefs follow strict hygiene standards and prepare a variety of dishes with locally sourced ingredients whenever possible.
A typical day starts with a hearty breakfast including items like porridge, toast, eggs, pancakes, and fresh fruits. Lunches and dinners often include a combination of rice, pasta, potatoes, vegetables, and proteins such as chicken or beef. Tanzanian staples like ugali and local stews may also be served.
We accommodate dietary preferences and restrictions with advance notice, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and allergy-sensitive options.
To keep your energy up between meals, we recommend bringing personal snacks such as protein bars, trail mix, and dried fruit. Staying hydrated is essential, and boiled or treated drinking water is provided throughout the trek.
For a deeper dive into what to expect, check out our blog on Food During the Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route Trek.
