Discover the unique accommodation experience on the Marangu Route – the only Kilimanjaro route with mountain huts. Comfort, safety, and warm shelter await you.

Marangu Route Accommodation: The Only Hut-Based Option on Kilimanjaro

When planning your Kilimanjaro adventure, your choice of route will not only determine your trekking path but also your accommodation experience. The Marangu Route, often referred to as the “Coca-Cola Route,” stands out for being the only Kilimanjaro route that offers overnight stays in mountain huts rather than tents.

This makes it especially appealing for trekkers who prefer added comfort and protection from the elements.

Why Choose Hut Accommodation?

Unlike other Kilimanjaro routes where you sleep in tents under the stars, the Marangu Route features permanent wooden A-frame huts at each overnight stop. These huts provide:

  • Solid shelter from rain, wind, and cold
  • Single bunk beds with mattresses
  • Solar-powered lighting in common areas
  • Dining halls where trekkers eat together
  • Basic but clean toilets (some shared flush toilets and long drops)

The Marangu Route’s hut system makes it an ideal option during the rainy season or for climbers looking for a less rugged experience.

Accommodation by Camp on the Marangu Route

Mandara Hut (2,700 m)

Located in the rainforest zone, Mandara Hut is your first overnight stop. These huts are grouped in clusters and offer shared sleeping quarters. Nearby, you’ll find the short path to Maundi Crater with amazing views over Kenya.

Horombo Hut (3,720 m)
This is the only camp on any Kilimanjaro route that allows for an acclimatization day, which is key to your summit success. Horombo is larger and more open, with sweeping views of both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.

Kibo Hut (4,700 m)
Located in a cold and stark alpine desert, this hut is more basic and dorm-style, serving as the final base before your midnight summit push. It’s all about rest and preparation here.

Back via Horombo Hut
After summiting Uhuru Peak via Gilman’s Point, you return to Kibo and descend to Horombo for your final overnight. It’s the best night of sleep after conquering the Roof of Africa.

Pros of Marangu Route Hut Accommodation

  • No tents required – lighter pack weight
  • Great during rainy seasons
  • More comfortable sleep on beds vs ground mats
  • Social experience – huts encourage interaction among trekkers
  • Cleaner dining and toilet facilities
