Mweka Route Kilimanjaro
The Mweka Route on Mount Kilimanjaro is not a route used for ascending the mountain, but rather a dedicated descent trail used by trekkers who summit via the Machame, Lemosho, Umbwe, or Shira routes. While you won’t be climbing up Kilimanjaro via Mweka, understanding this route is important as it’s how most trekkers descend after reaching Uhuru Peak.

The Mweka descent trail begins at Barafu Camp or Millennium Camp, depending on your summit route and timing. It leads hikers down the southern slope of Kilimanjaro through alpine desert and moorland zones, eventually entering the lush Montane Rainforest, and finally ending at the Mweka Gate (1,640 meters). This descent usually takes 1 to 2 days, depending on your trek itinerary.

What makes the Mweeka Route notable is the scenic beauty during descent. Many trekkers appreciate the chance to fully soak in Kilimanjaro’s diverse ecosystems now that the physical strain of the summit push has passed. The trail is well-maintained and marked, with lush vegetation, birdlife, and occasional monkey sightings as you descend.
Since the Mweeka Route is steeper than the Marangu descent, trekking poles and proper footwear are essential for knee support and traction, especially in wet conditions. Hike Kilimanjaro’s expert team ensures a safe and supportive descent with certified guides, nutrient-rich meals, and first-aid trained staff throughout the journey.
Note: The Mweeka Route is only used for descending Kilimanjaro. It is not permitted to climb via this trail.

At Hike Kilimanjaro, all of our Machame, Lemosho, Shira, and Umbwe itineraries include the Mweka Route descent. If you’re curious about how your Kilimanjaro experience ends or want to understand your full trekking route better, feel free to contact us for detailed route planning.
Plan your Kilimanjaro climb with confidence, knowing that your descent via the Mweeka Route is scenic, safe, and professionally managed.
