Mount Kilimanjaro
The Marangu Route is the oldest and most established trail on Mount Kilimanjaro, earning it the nickname the “Coca-Cola Route” due to the availability of refreshments at the mountain huts. It is the only route on Kilimanjaro that offers hut accommodations, making it a preferred choice for climbers who want to avoid camping in tents. These shared, dormitory-style huts provide beds, mattresses, and basic amenities, offering added comfort especially during the rainy season.
Starting at the Marangu Gate on the southeastern side of Kilimanjaro, this route ascends gradually through a dense rainforest filled with towering trees, lush vegetation, and abundant wildlife. As the trail climbs, it transitions into moorland and eventually crosses the alpine desert before reaching the Kibo Hut, the final base before the summit push to Uhuru Peak.
The Marangu Route follows an “out-and-back” trail, meaning climbers ascend and descend along the same path. While this makes logistics simpler, it also means less scenic variation compared to other trails like Lemosho or Machame. However, its gradual slopes and straightforward navigation make it a great option for trekkers looking for a shorter and less physically demanding route, especially those on a tight schedule.
Despite its reputation as an “easier” route, altitude sickness is still a risk due to the shorter acclimatization window. Many climbers opt for the 6-day version of the Marangu Route, which includes an extra acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, dramatically improving summit success rates.
Because of the huts and the relative ease of the trail, the Marangu Route is often chosen by first-time climbers or those looking for a more budget-friendly option. However, it is important to note that the summit night from Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak is long and strenuous, and the route should not be underestimated.
At Hike Kilimanjaro, we offer the 6-day Marangu Route trek, which we highly recommend over the shorter 5-day version. The extra day at Horombo Hut greatly increases your chances of reaching the summit and enjoying the journey with fewer symptoms of altitude sickness.

The Marangu Route is considered one of the easier trekking trails on Mount Kilimanjaro in terms of terrain and logistics. The gradual slope and well-maintained trail make it less physically taxing, and sleeping in huts adds comfort. However, the shorter duration leads to a lower acclimatization rate, so altitude sickness is still a significant risk, especially on the 5-day itinerary. The 6-day version is much safer and more successful.
The total trekking distance on the Marangu Route is approximately 72 kilometers (45 miles) round trip. Most climbers complete the route in 5 or 6 days on the mountain, with the 6-day version including a crucial acclimatization day at Horombo Hut. With travel, you’ll need 7–8 days total. For the best summit success rate, Hike Kilimanjaro strongly recommends the 6-day itinerary.
Due to the shorter length and rapid ascent, the summit success rate is lower than on longer routes like Lemosho or Machame. The average success rate is about 50% for the 5-day route, but jumps to 75–85% for the 6-day version. At Hike Kilimanjaro, our 6-day Marangu Route success rate is above 90%, thanks to our experienced guides, detailed acclimatization strategies, and superior support.
The Marangu Route offers a scenic yet less diverse trekking experience. The route begins in the lush rainforest zone with a rich variety of plant life and bird species, then climbs through moorlands and alpine desert toward Kibo Hut. While it lacks the circuit-style panoramic views found on Lemosho or Northern Circuit, the sunrise summit over Mawenzi Peak is breathtaking. The return on the same trail means you’ll see familiar sights, but in a new light.
Yes, the Marangu Route can be one of the busiest routes, particularly during peak seasons, due to its reputation as the easiest route and the appeal of hut accommodation. Shared sleeping spaces and dining halls can feel less private. If you’re seeking a quieter, more remote experience, other routes like Lemosho or Rongai may be better suited. However, for comfort and convenience, Marangu remains a top choice.
No prior climbing experience is required for the Marangu Route. It is one of the best routes for first-time trekkers, solo travelers, and those looking for a budget-friendly Kilimanjaro climb with added comfort. Nevertheless, a solid fitness level is needed, and trekkers should be prepared for the high-altitude summit push from Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak.
The Marangu Route is the only trail on Mount Kilimanjaro that uses huts instead of tents, making it more appealing during the rainy season or for travelers not accustomed to camping. It’s also the only route with a round-trip along the same path, which simplifies the trek logistically. Its shorter duration makes it more affordable, but this comes at the cost of acclimatization time, which is why the 6-day version is essential for safety and success.
The best times to climb are the dry seasons: January to early March and June to October. These months offer the clearest skies and most comfortable trekking conditions. The Marangu Route can also be a good option during the shoulder season because of its hut accommodations, which provide shelter during unexpected rain.
At Hike Kilimanjaro, we specialize in expertly guided, high-altitude treks with maximum safety, comfort, and success. Our Marangu Route packages include airport transfers, hotel accommodation, top-rated mountain gear, and experienced local guides.
