Discover the story of Hans Meyer, the first person to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in 1889. Explore his journey, challenges, and legacy on Africa’s highest peak.
Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet), has captivated adventurers for centuries. Towering above the Tanzanian plains, this snow-capped giant stood unconquered for generations until one bold explorer changed history. That man was Hans Meyer, the first person to reach the summit of Kilimanjaro on October 6, 1889.
Hans Meyer was a German geographer, professor, and mountaineer born in 1858. His fascination with Kilimanjaro led him to attempt the climb not once, but three separate times before finally succeeding. Meyer’s persistence and curiosity fueled one of the greatest achievements in mountaineering history.
Meyer’s first attempt in 1887 ended in failure when he was stopped by heavy snow and lack of proper equipment. The following year, he returned with Austrian climber Ludwig Purtscheller. But this expedition also ended prematurely after Meyer was captured during a tribal uprising (the Abushiri Revolt) and later released.
It wasn’t until 1889, with better planning, support from locals, and improved gear, that Meyer and Purtscheller finally stood atop the highest free-standing mountain in the world.
Meyer and Purtscheller climbed via what is believed to be a version of today’s Marangu Route. After passing what we now know as Kibo Hut, they tackled the steep and icy final stretch of Kibo. Their historic summit took place on October 6, 1889, where they planted a German flag and recorded meteorological readings.
At the time, the highest point was not called Uhuru Peak. The summit was simply referred to as Kaiser Wilhelm Peak, a name that changed after Tanzanian independence in 1961 to Uhuru, meaning “freedom” in Swahili.
Meyer’s success would not have been possible without the assistance of local Chagga porters and guides. Among them was Yohane Lauwo, a young man from the Marangu area who is often credited as one of the first Africans to reach the summit. His contribution remains a powerful reminder of the local knowledge and strength behind Kilimanjaro’s climbing legacy.
Meyer’s pioneering ascent marked the beginning of Kilimanjaro’s modern mountaineering era. His published works and maps provided future climbers with critical insights, and his story continues to inspire adventurers from around the world.
Today, thousands of trekkers follow in his footsteps each year, choosing routes like Machame, Lemosho, Marangu, Rongai, or the Northern Circuit to reach Uhuru Peak.
At Hike Kilimanjaro, we guide climbers safely to the summit with expert-certified guides, modern equipment, and ethical local support, just like Meyer relied on in his time. Whether you want to conquer the mountain in 6, 7, or 8 days, we have the perfect route for you.
