Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route

There are several established routes to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, including Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Shira, Rongai, and Umbwe. The Marangu, Machame, and Umbwe routes approach the mountain from the southern side, while the Lemosho and Shira routes begin on the western slopes. The Rongai Route starts from the northern side near the Kenyan border. With the exception of the Marangu Route, all climbers descend via the Mweka Route.

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro via the Lemosho Route

The Lemosho Route is widely regarded as one of the most scenic and successful routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. Starting on the remote western side of the mountain at Londorossi Gate, this route offers a quieter and more immersive trekking experience during the first days of the climb.

The trail passes through lush rainforest, beautiful heath and moorland zones, and the spectacular Shira Plateau before joining the Machame Route near Lava Tower. From there, the route follows Kilimanjaro’s famous Southern Circuit, providing climbers with breathtaking views from multiple sides of the mountain before reaching Uhuru Peak.

One of the greatest advantages of the Lemosho Route is its excellent acclimatization profile. The longer itinerary allows climbers more time to adjust to the altitude, significantly increasing summit success rates compared to shorter routes. Along the way, trekkers may encounter wildlife such as colobus monkeys, buffalo, and even elephants in the lower forest sections.

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be welcomed by our team and transferred to your hotel in Arusha for an overnight stay at Planet Lodge. Before your climb begins, your experienced mountain guide will conduct a detailed briefing, inspect your trekking equipment, and assist with arranging any rental gear you may require for your Kilimanjaro adventure.

After check-in, you will have a full briefing with your guide, including a gear check to ensure you’re fully prepared for the trek.

Note:
The pre-trip briefing will take place at our office if you arrive before 4:00 PM, and at your hotel if you arrive later in the evening. Please ensure you bring a copy of your passport and a readable copy of your travel insurance policy to the meeting. These documents are required for us to obtain your trekking permits and complete necessary documentation for the trek.

Please also note that hotel check-in is from midday (12:00 PM). If your flight arrives early in the morning, kindly let us know in advance. We can arrange a day-use room for you, or, if you prefer, we can organize some short activities to keep you engaged until your check-in time.

After breakfast, we begin with a scenic drive through the western slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro to a high-altitude drop-off point near Shira Gate. This unique start places us directly on the Shira Plateau, bypassing the rainforest zone.

The trek to Shira 1 Camp is short but crucial, allowing the body to begin adapting immediately to higher altitude. The open landscape offers sweeping views and a dramatic introduction to the mountain.

Today’s hike continues across the Shira Plateau with incredible views of Kibo peak. You’ll pass by landmarks like Shira Cathedral and Shira Needle. The trail gradually ascends to Moir Hut, located beneath the Lent Hills. Upon arrival, an optional afternoon acclimatization hike is available for those who feel strong.

This is a key acclimatization day. We ascend steadily to Lava Tower, reaching 4,600m. After spending time at this altitude, we descend to Barranco Camp.

The descent enhances acclimatization and introduces the famous giant senecio plants, creating one of the most iconic landscapes on Kilimanjaro.

We begin by climbing the Barranco Wall, a steep but manageable scramble offering spectacular views.

After crossing ridges and valleys, we reach Karanga Camp, where we rest and prepare for higher altitude.

We ascend to Barafu Camp, the final base before the summit attempt. The environment becomes more rugged and alpine.

Upon arrival, we rest, hydrate, and prepare for the midnight ascent. Early sleep is essential for summit success.

We begin the summit push at midnight. The climb to Stella Point is steep and demanding, followed by a gradual ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

After reaching the summit, we descend to Mweka Camp for overnight rest.

We descend through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, once you arrive at Mweka Gate, you’ll receive your well-earned summit certificate from the Kilimanjaro National Park authorities, a proud moment marking your successful climb to Uhuru Peak. Your Hike Kilimanjaro driver will be waiting to greet you and transfer you to Mweka Village, where you’ll enjoy a freshly prepared picnic hot lunch en route.

After lunch, continue the return journey to either Arusha or Moshi. This marks the perfect time to reflect on your unforgettable experience and celebrate your accomplishment of conquering Africa’s highest peak.

After breakfast, depending on your flight schedule, you will be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your departure.

Note:
Check-out time at the hotel is 10:00 AM. If your flight is scheduled for the evening or night, you may book a day-use room to rest and freshen up before your departure. Please inform us in advance if you would like us to reserve a room for you.
