8 Days Tanzania Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival – Transfer to Planet Lodge, Kilimanjaro Airport Area
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you’ll be greeted by your Hike Kilimanjaro guide. After a brief introduction and safari briefing, transfer to Planet Lodge – Kilimanjaro Airport, a peaceful lodge just minutes away from the airport. This tranquil setting offers the perfect place to relax and recover from your international journey, with lush gardens, a swimming pool, and mountain views.
Drive time: ~15 minutes from JRO
Note:
Your pre-safari briefing will be conducted at your hotel. If you arrive before 5:00 PM on the day prior to your safari, the briefing will take place that evening. If you arrive later, your guide will meet you for the briefing on the morning of your safari before departure. This ensures you’re fully prepared and have the opportunity to ask any last-minute questions.
Please also note that hotel check-in is from midday (12:00 PM). If your flight arrives early in the morning, kindly let us know in advance. We can arrange a day-use room for you, or, if you prefer, we can organize some short activities to keep you engaged until your check-in time.
Day 2: Maasai Cultural Experience at Olpopongi Village
After breakfast, drive west through Maasai country to Olpopongi Maasai Cultural Village. This is a genuine, non-commercial cultural experience where guests are welcomed into a full-scale traditional Maasai village.
Participate in engaging cultural activities, including:
- A guided tour of traditional Maasai huts (“enkangs”)
- Hands-on experience in spear throwing and beadwork
- Listening to captivating Maasai folktales
- Watching or joining traditional singing and dancing
- Interacting with a local herbalist to learn about traditional medicine
Enjoy a hot local Maasai-style lunch and later take a scenic walking safari guided by Maasai warriors, who explain animal tracking, edible plants, and their semi-nomadic lifestyle. The day ends with a bonfire and BBQ dinner under the stars.
- Drive time: ~2 hrs from Kilimanjaro Airport
Day 3: Waterfalls, Coffee & Chagga Traditions – Materuni Village
After breakfast, drive north toward Mount Kilimanjaro to Materuni Village, home of the Chagga people. Start with a moderate guided hike to the stunning Materuni Waterfalls, located in a lush rainforest teeming with birdlife.
Then visit a local Chagga household to engage in an interactive coffee-making ceremony. Roast, grind, and brew your own cup of organic Arabica coffee while singing traditional songs. You’ll also enjoy a hot local lunch prepared with fresh produce.
In the afternoon, return to Arusha and check in at the charming Pazuri Inn, located in a quiet suburb of the city.
- Drive time: ~3.5 hrs total (Materuni to Arusha)
- Activities: Waterfall hike, coffee experience, cultural immersion
Day 4: Game Viewing in Tarangire National Park
Leave Arusha after breakfast and head to Tarangire National Park, known for its large elephant populations, ancient baobab trees, and thriving birdlife. Enjoy a full-day game drive in this diverse ecosystem, spotting giraffes, zebras, lions, wildebeest, and possibly leopards.
Midday, enjoy a picnic lunch at a scenic site inside the park, often near the Tarangire River. Later, exit the park and ascend to the green highlands of Karatu.
- Drive time: ~2 hrs to Tarangire, 1 hr to Karatu
Day 5: Journey to Serengeti – Central Region Game Drive
After breakfast, drive via the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, stopping at a crater viewpoint. Continue into the Serengeti, the crown jewel of Tanzania’s national parks. Your game drive begins the moment you enter the gate.
As you head toward central Serengeti’s Seronera Valley, you’ll pass endless plains and likely encounter elephants, lions, buffalos, and possibly cheetahs. This region is rich in year-round wildlife due to its permanent water sources.
Settle into Embalakai Tented Camp, where you’ll fall asleep to the sounds of the wild.
- Drive time: ~4-5 hrs with game viewing en route
Day 6: Full-Day Serengeti Safari Adventure
Spend a full day exploring Serengeti National Park with both morning and afternoon game drives. Depending on the season, you may witness part of the Great Wildebeest Migration, as thousands of animals cross the plains in search of water and grazing.
Spot big cats like lions, cheetahs, and leopards, along with elephants, hippos, and crocodiles. Your guide will tailor the route based on the movement of wildlife to maximize sightings.
Lunch will be served picnic-style in the bush, offering scenic views and quiet surroundings
Day 7: Ngorongoro Crater Game Drive
Depart early in the morning from Serengeti and head straight toward Ngorongoro Crater. Descend 600 meters into the world’s largest inactive volcanic caldera for game drive. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is teeming with wildlife, including the Big Five rhinos, lions, leopards, elephants, and buffalos.
Enjoy a scenic picnic lunch by a hippo pool within the crater floor. In the afternoon, ascend to the crater rim and continue to Karatu.
Drive time: ~3 hrs from Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater.
Day 8: Hadzabe Tribe Experience – Transfer to Airport

The early morning is ideal for observing their traditional hunting techniques, archery skills, and daily routines. You’ll also meet the Datoga blacksmiths and learn how they forge tools and jewelry.
After the visit, return to Arusha and transfer to Kilimanjaro Airport for your departure flight.
Drive time: ~1 hr to Eyasi, ~4 hrs to Arusha/JRO
- Breakfast & Lunch included
