Tanzania Safari Weather and Temperature

When is the Best Time to Visit Tanzania?

Many travelers ask us at Hike Kilimanjaro when the best time to visit Tanzania is. The truth is—there’s no single right answer. It all depends on what you want to experience, where you plan to go, your budget, and your personal interests. To help you decide, we’ve put together a comprehensive guide on the best time to visit Tanzania.

Dry Season (June to October & December to February):
This is the most popular time for safaris and beach holidays. The weather is pleasant, and wildlife viewing is at its peak. However, expect higher hotel rates and busier national parks and attractions.

Mid Season (March & November):
A great balance for those seeking fewer crowds and moderate prices. While occasional rains may occur, wildlife is still abundant, and the atmosphere is more relaxed.

Wet Season (April & May):
Ideal for budget-conscious travelers, this low season brings lush, green landscapes and the lowest accommodation rates. Be prepared for heavy rain, which may affect travel plans, but offers a quieter, more serene safari experience.

What Kind of Weather and Temperature Can I Expect While on Safari in Tanzania?

Tanzania generally offers warm, pleasant weather year-round, making it an excellent safari destination. During the dry season (June to October), expect clear skies, low humidity, and daytime temperatures ranging between 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F). Evenings and early mornings can be chilly, especially in higher altitudes like Ngorongoro, so packing layers is essential.

In the wet season (November to May), temperatures remain warm—between 23°C and 31°C (73°F to 88°F)—but you can expect short, heavy showers, especially in March, April, and May. These rains turn the landscape lush and green, and wildlife is still abundant, though sometimes more dispersed

Can we hike Mount Kilimanjaro first and then go on a wildlife safari in Tanzania?

Absolutely! Hiking Mount Kilimanjaro before your wildlife safari is actually a popular and recommended itinerary for many travelers.

Climbing Kilimanjaro is a physically demanding adventure that requires energy, focus, and endurance. Doing the trek first ensures you’re at your strongest for the summit. Afterward, you can unwind and enjoy the more relaxing pace of a wildlife safari, while still experiencing Tanzania’s stunning landscapes and abundant wildlife.

This combination offers the perfect balance—conquer Africa’s highest peak and then reward yourself with a serene, scenic safari through iconic parks like Serengeti, Tarangire, and Ngorongoro Crater.

Would you like a sample itinerary that combines both?

Arrival and Visas

Is it possible to obtain a visa for Tanzania upon arrival at the airport?

Yes, travelers can obtain a visa on arrival at major airports in Tanzania, including Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam, and Zanzibar. You will need:

  • A valid passport (with at least 6 months' validity)
  • A completed application form (available on-site)
  • Proof of onward travel
  • Sufficient funds for your stay

The visa fee is typically $50 (or $100 for U.S. citizens), payable in cash (USD).

To avoid any delays, Hike Kilimanjaro recommends applying for an e-Visa in advance through the official portal: https://visa.immigration.go.tz.

Always check the current visa requirements before travel, as policies may change.

Who will come to pick me up at the airport upon my arrival?

When you arrive, a member of the Hike Kilimanjaro team will be waiting for you outside the airport terminal holding a signboard with both our company name and your travel group name. You will then be escorted to your hotel in a private, comfortable tourist vehicle for your convenience and comfort.

How long shoul i expect the visa process and baggage claim to take upon arrival at the airport?

At Kilimanjaro International Airport, the process of obtaining a visa and collecting your baggage generally takes 30 minutes to 1 hour. However, this duration may vary depending on factors such as the time of day, the number of arriving flights, and passenger volume. We recommend allowing some extra time for these processes to ensure a smooth arrival.

Can I buy a SIM card at the airport in Tanzania?

Yes, SIM cards are available for purchase at the airport from local telecom providers such as Vodacom, Airtel, and Tigo. We recommend Vodacom for its extensive nationwide coverage.

SIM card counters are open from morning until evening. If your flight arrives late and the counters are closed, don’t worry—our driver can take you to a Vodacom shop the following morning before your trip begins.

You can purchase a SIM card in the arrivals area after collecting your baggage. Please remember to bring a passport-sized photo and a copy of your passport, as these are required for registration.

Where can I exchange my money upon arrival in Tanzania?

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you can exchange your currency at one of the money exchange counters in the arrivals area. Alternatively, Hike Kilimanjaro can guide you to authorized exchange centers near your hotel, which are typically open during the day for your convenience.

Tanzania Safari Cost

Can I use a credit card in Tanzania?

Yes, you can use credit cards in Tanzania. Visa, Mastercard, and American Express are widely accepted at most hotels, restaurants, and shops. Hike Kilimanjaro recommends carrying some cash for smaller purchases or in areas where cards might not be accepted.

You can exchange currency at the airport, local banks, or use ATMs before heading to the national parks. For better exchange rates and convenience, it's best to exchange your money in Arusha or Moshi before starting your safari.

To confirm your booking with Hike Kilimanjaro, a 30% deposit is required. The remaining balance can be paid up to 4 weeks before your trip or upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport.

We accept US Dollars (cash) and credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, and American Express) in Tanzania. Please note that a 3% transaction fee applies to all credit card payments.

How do I pay the remaining balance of my trip upon arrival in Tanzania? US Dollars cash or credit card?

You can pay the remaining balance of your trip using US Dollars cash or credit card (Visa, MasterCard, and American Express). Please note that a 3% transaction fee will be added to credit card payments. For this reason, Hike Kilimanjaro encourages paying with USD cash upon arrival.

We recommend using larger bills (USD 50 or 100). Also, ensure that the cash is not older than 2009 and is in good condition, as worn, torn, or crumpled bills are not accepted by banks.

How are the ATM and money exchange facilities in Tanzania?

There are ATM and money exchange facilities almost every place, where you will be staying in Tanzania. So, you can easily use your cards to cash out limited sum of money to which a minimum charge is deducted by the ATM facility itself. Questions or Assistance

For more information, please refer to our [full Terms & Conditions] or reach out to our support team. We're here to help you plan with confidence.

Do I need to tip my guide, airport transfer driver, and lodge staff? How much would that be?

Yes, tipping is customary and appreciated in Tanzania's tourism industry. While not mandatory, it is a meaningful way to acknowledge the efforts of those who enhance your safari experience.

Recommended Tipping Guidelines:

  • Safari Guide: $10–$20 per person per day
  • Lodge/Camp Staff: $5–$10 per person per day
  • Airport Transfer Driver: $1–$5 per person per transfer

Tipping Etiquette:

  • For lodge or camp staff, it's common to place your tip in a communal tip box at reception, which is then distributed among the staff.
  • Tipping in US dollars is widely accepted; however, for smaller amounts or tipping individuals in local areas, Tanzanian Shillings (TZS) may be more practical.
  • Ensure that any US dollar bills you use are newer than 2006, as older bills may not be accepted.

If you are traveling with Hike Kilimanjaro, we can provide further guidance on tipping practices and assist you in preparing appropriate denominations for your journey.

Is there any communication while we are on safari?

Yes, there is usually communication while you are on safari in Tanzania. Most safari vehicles are equipped with radios to stay in touch with other guides and the base for safety and logistical purposes.

In terms of mobile connectivity, many areas within the national parks have cell coverage, though it can be spotty or weak in remote regions. Lodges and camps often offer Wi-Fi in common areas, but the speed and reliability may vary depending on the location.

If you need to stay connected consistently, we recommend purchasing a local SIM card with data upon arrival in Tanzania. This ensures you have access to mobile networks where coverage is available.

What is the Internet availability while on safari?

Internet availability while on safari in Tanzania varies depending on your location and the type of accommodation. Most lodges and tented camps offer Wi-Fi in common areas such as the lounge or dining area, though the connection may be slow or limited in remote parks.

Luxury lodges are more likely to provide stable internet access, while more basic camps may have limited or no connectivity. Mobile network coverage is available in and around major towns and some parts of national parks, so using a local SIM card with data is a good option if you want more consistent access.

Keep in mind that part of the safari experience is being immersed in nature, so many travelers use this opportunity to disconnect and enjoy the wilderness.

Does it cost extra if I am a solo traveler on a Tanzania safari?

Yes, solo travelers often incur additional costs due to "single supplements." These fees compensate for the cost of single occupancy in accommodations typically designed for double occupancy. Single supplements can range from 25% to 75% of the standard rate, depending on the lodge or camp.

Sharing costs for safari car and airport transfers:

When you book a safari, the cost of the safari vehicle and airport transfers is typically shared among the group. For example, a vehicle can accommodate up to six window seats, and the price for the vehicle per day remains the same whether the vehicle is full with six people or if you are the only one in the vehicle. This means, as a solo traveler, you'll pay the same amount for your seat in the vehicle as if the car were fully occupied. The more people you share with, the less it costs per person, making it more affordable.

Tips to minimize extra costs:

  • Travel during low or shoulder seasons: Some lodges waive or reduce single supplements during these periods.
  • Opt for group safaris: Joining a group can eliminate single supplement fees and offer a more social experience.
  • Book with operators that offer single-friendly policies: Some companies do not charge extra for solo travelers.
Is there a provision for a refund policy if I don't accomplish the safari?

Hike Kilimanjaro understands that unexpected circumstances may arise, preventing you from completing your safari. While we strive to accommodate every traveler’s needs, our refund policy depends on the situation and timing of the cancellation or interruption.

In general, cancellations made well in advance may qualify for partial refunds. However, cancellations or changes made closer to the safari's start date may be subject to stricter terms, and refunds may not be possible. If you are unable to complete the safari due to unforeseen circumstances, such as illness or an emergency, we may offer partial refunds or alternative arrangements, depending on the circumstances and the terms of your booking.

We highly recommend purchasing travel insurance before your safari to protect yourself against unexpected events, such as trip cancellations or interruptions. Travel insurance can help cover situations that prevent you from completing your safari.

For more specific details or concerns about our refund policy for your safari, please contact us directly.

How many people can your safari vehicles accommodate?

Our safari vehicles typically have a capacity of up to 6 passengers, each with a guaranteed window seat, ensuring a comfortable and immersive wildlife viewing experience. These 4x4 vehicles are specially designed for safaris, offering ample space for photography, relaxation, and safety.

At Hike Kilimanjaro, all our safaris are private—meaning you won’t be grouped with strangers. However, clients are welcome to form their own private group of any size. We will provide the appropriate number of vehicles to accommodate your group, with each vehicle seating a maximum of 6 people.

If you're traveling solo or with fewer companions, you’ll still have a private vehicle, though the cost per person may be higher compared to a group sharing. Sharing costs within your own group is a great way to reduce the overall expense while still enjoying a personalized safari experience.

Can I add extra days to my safari trip?

Yes, you can absolutely add extra days to your safari trip! At Hike Kilimanjaro, we offer flexible itineraries and can customize your safari to include more time in specific parks, cultural experiences, or even relaxation days. Just let us know your preferences, and we’ll tailor the journey to suit your schedule and interests.

On August 12, our Kilimanjaro adventure began with eight of us. Accompanied by our guides Richard, Keddy, Innocent, and “Doc” Florian, as well as a 28-person crew from Hike Kilimanjaro, we set out from Lemosho Gate on the 8-day Northern Circuit route. And those days turned out to be unforgettable. We were well taken care of, well-provided for, and well-supported; everything was perfectly organized. Every morning, we were sent off on our hike with dancing and singing, and welcomed just as warmly upon arrival at camp. The cook, Godson, whipped up fantastic meals, and I’m convinced that his divine soups and the morning porridge played a major role in our success in reaching the summit. The route offered stunning scenery and, due to its length, was ideal for acclimatizing to the altitude. In the evenings, there were medical check-ups, so we always felt safe. Thank you for letting us be part of the Hike Kilimanjaro family during this time, and thank you for your motivation and warmth. We highly recommend this trip with you—every detail was taken care of, even the hot water bottle in the evening.

Top tier team to help you climb Mount Kilimanjaro. We did the 7 day Lemosho route. We met with Florian and Keddy the day before the hike and they helped us get deeper understanding of the route, conditions and expectations. They also checked our gear to make sure we had everything we needed. For our family of 5, we had 3 guides ( Florian, Keddy and Inno )and 18 other support staff. The whole team was very kind, polite , always happy to help and very professional. They went above and beyond to help us get through the ups and down of the hike. They also did health checks including oxygen levels and looked out for other symptoms each day. They supported us and made sure we had an amazing , once in a lifetime experience reaching the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. The whole team of Hike Kilimanjaro gets 5 stars and they come highly recommended.

Highlight of our trip It's a shame I'm only posting this review now, but we completed the 7-day Lemosho Route trek with Hike Kilimanjaro (formerly Landside Adventures) in October 2025, and it was easily the highlight of our entire trip to Tanzania. From the very beginning, the experience was exceptional. We worked with Maxon during the booking process, and he was always responsive, professional, and easy to work with. Any questions we had were answered promptly, making the planning process smooth and stress-free. The night before our trek, Maxond, as well as our guides, Keddy and Florian, met us at our hotel to review our gear, conduct safety checks, and answer any last-minute questions. Their professionalism immediately gave us confidence that we were in good hands. Throughout the trek, Keddy and Florian were outstanding. They paced us perfectly, constantly checked on our well-being, and made sure we were acclimatizing safely. Their knowledge of the mountain, wildlife, terrain, and altitude-related challenges was impressive, and goes to show the level of knowledge required to be a guide. Beyond being excellent guides, they were also incredibly fun to spend time with. We shared some of the best laughs of our entire trip thanks to them :) One thing that exceeded all expectations was the food. Every meal felt restaurant-quality, and the portions were incredibly generous. A huge thank you to Chef Godson, who consistently delivered delicious meals despite the challenging mountain environment. We were also fortunate to be supported by an amazing porter team: KC, Meschak, Hermann, Geoffrey, Victor, George, and Joseph. KC was incredible, especially during some of the tougher night hikes and on summit night, where his support made a huge difference. Meschak's positive energy was contagious and helped keep spirits high throughout the trek. Hermann's constant smile brightened every day on the mountain. Geoffrey provided exceptional service at camp, always making us feel welcome and cared for. Victor, George, and Joseph were always ready to lend a hand whenever we were moving a little slower or needed extra support. Safety was clearly a top priority for the entire team. Health checks were conducted every evening to monitor our vitals and ensure everyone was acclimatizing properly. This level of care gave us additional peace of mind throughout the climb. Thanks to the excellent guidance, pacing, and support from the entire crew, we successfully reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Summit night was one of the most challenging experiences we've ever faced, but it was also one of the most rewarding. Standing at the top above the clouds over Africa is a memory we'll never forget. The Lemosho Route treated us to some of the most breathtaking scenery we've ever experienced, and the support from the entire Hike Kilimanjaro team made the journey even more memorable. If you're considering climbing Kilimanjaro, we very much recommend Hike Kilimanjaro (formerly Landside Adventures). Their professionalism, attention to safety, incredible staff, and genuine care for their clients made this an unforgettable adventure and one of the best travel experiences we've ever had.

amazing experience The Serengeti and ngorongoro safari experiences were amazing. We visited Serengeti for 2 days and ngorongoro crater for 1 day. The guide, Sule, was very welcoming, kind and experienced. We saw the big 5, a kill as well as a rhino throughout our safari. It is an amazing experience for a very reasonable price. Choose Hike Kilimanjaro definitely for your safari trip.

Professional Team, Unforgettable Kilimanjaro Climb We completed the 8-day Northern Circuit route on Kilimanjaro, and it was an outstanding experience from start to finish. The entire team was highly professional, experienced, and incredibly well organized throughout the trek. Our guides inspired confidence at every stage — they were knowledgeable, attentive, and clearly very familiar with the mountain, which made us feel safe and well looked after at all times. Communication in advance of the trip was also excellent. Everything was handled clearly and professionally, which made the preparation process very smooth and gave us a good feeling even before the climb started. On the mountain itself, the whole team did a fantastic job and contributed to making this such a special experience. The support, friendliness, and overall organization were truly impressive. All in all, it was a wonderful and unforgettable journey, and we would highly recommend this team to anyone planning to climb Kilimanjaro.

Amazing Kilimanjaro & Safari Experience – Highly Recommend We booked our trip through Aventure Atlantis with Jean Ricard, who partners with Hike Kilimanjaro as the local outfitter in Tanzania—and honestly, everything was outstanding. From the moment we were picked up at the airport, to the hotel meet-and-greet with the team, to all transportation for both Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro, everything was smooth, well organized, and stress-free. What truly made the experience exceptional were our guides—Faza, Keddy, and Innocent. They were professional, attentive, and incredibly knowledgeable. Our group had very different needs and abilities, and they handled it all with care and confidence. Even with the intense rain we faced, we always felt safe, supported, and focused on reaching the summit. A huge shoutout also goes to the real heroes of the trip—the support staff. The porters carried unbelievable loads (tables, chairs, full camp setups!) to make our experience comfortable every single day. And the food… absolutely incredible. The chef delivered meals that felt Michelin-quality, right in the middle of the mountain. We truly ate like kings and queens. One downside we noticed is that the mountain can be quite dirty. However, Hike Kilimanjaro made a real effort to minimize our impact, and we truly appreciated that. I hope more companies and guides follow their example and take responsibility for preserving this incredible place. Special mention to Maxxon as well—awesome energy and support throughout the trip! To top it all off, they also organized our safari after the climb. We visited Ngorongoro, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara, and each park absolutely delivered. Just be ready for some long (but worthwhile!) hours in the safari jeep. All in all, an unforgettable adventure. I highly recommend Hike Kilimanjaro if you’re looking for a real, authentic experience in Tanzania.
